West Village Townhouse
257 West 4th Street, New York, NY 10111

Architect + Interior Design: Sebastien Segers
Renovation Completed: 2021

Cape Advisors completed a redesign and renovation of an 1870s West Village Townhouse in 2021. The multifamily property had not been renovated since the 1940s and had been abandoned for 10 years prior to Cape Advisors’ acquisition. The firm enlisted Paris-based architect Sebastien Segers - who had previously worked with both Jean Nouvel and Marc Newson - to reimagine the property and convert it into a single family home.

The resulting renovation, inspired by aviation and nautical design, featured a selection of the finest materials sourced from around the world, including walnut paneling, custom millwork and molding; bespoke cast curved crown molding, and hand carved Statuarietto white and Pietra grey marble sinks and slabs. The house is anchored by a dramatic and sinuous U-shaped staircase topped by a walkable skylight which serves as the focal point of the house in dramatic dialogue with each level of the home. This staircase inspired the invention of an S-curve door, a first-of-its-kind, which harmonizes with the staircase. The hand-crafted walnut kitchen includes a honed Pietra gray marble countertop carved with a marine edge.  The cabinets include a micro-rope of silver-coated enameled-copper and antique-brass-woven fabric created by Parisian artist Sophie Mallebranche.

↓ More Information

A terrace with glass blocks was added to the rear of the townhouse to provide an indoor/outdoor flow on the parlor level and bring natural light to the gym and yoga room on the lower level.  Unlacquered brass Meljac light switches combined with the Mark Newson-designed Valli & Valli door hardware add to the quiet sophistication of the design throughout the house.  The roof is covered with custom white Terrazzo tiles surrounding a walkable skylight over the central stair and includes extensive landscaping to create a lush and relaxing al fresco environment.

For the interiors, the team selected furnishings which mixed traditional and modern elements, respecting the townhome’s 19th century history and reflecting modern living.
